Andy Brant is known around town as an everyday hero, often spotted wearing gloves and picking up litter along Boston Road, doing his part to keep Billerica beautiful. But one day in October, his commitment to doing the right thing went even further.
On Oct. 2, while out on one of his regular cleanup walks, Brant spotted a weathered envelope tucked away in the brush. Looking inside, he saw nine $100 bills and a withdrawal slip. Without hesitation, Brant went directly to the Billerica Police station and turned it in, ensuring it had the best chance of being reunited with its rightful owner.
Thanks to his actions, the funds were returned to an elderly North Billerica resident who had lost the money in May and believed it was gone forever. At a time when she was facing financial hardship, the return of the money was a tremendous and unexpected blessing.
“You made a big impact on a very appreciative woman who lost that money five months prior,” said Police Chief Roy Frost, who brought the good deed to the Select Board’s attention. “Nobody would have known if you had put that right in your pocket, but you didn’t do that; you brought it right up to the police station. And I’m sure you didn’t think of doing anything different, but it’s nice to see. Thank you for setting an example.”
In recognition of his honesty and community spirit, the Billerica Select Board honored Brant for his actions on Nov. 3, presenting a proclamation that serves as a reminder that integrity and kindness still shine in everyday moments.
