Billerica Police Department Recognizes National Police Week

The Billerica Police Department is remembering four officers who gave their lives in the line of duty as the department recognizes National Police Week, which honors the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers across the nation, especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

In Billerica, the community is asked to remember:

  • Sgt. Ian G. Taylor, who gave his life on April 26, 2024. Sgt. Taylor was struck and killed by a piece of construction equipment while working a construction detail.
  • Patrolman Thomas E. Strunk, who gave his life on March 27, 1985. Patrolman Strunk was killed when he was dragged by a drunk driver while he attempted to turn off the ignition of the vehicle. He was off-duty and driving with his family at the time.
  • Patrolman Kenneth Barry Collins, who gave his life on Oct. 7, 1969. Patrolman Collins suffered fatal head injuries after responding to a fight at a local bar.
  • Patrolman Cassius W. White, who gave his life on August 23, 1936. Patrolman White was struck and killed by a drunk driver while assisting two state troopers who had stopped another car on Boston Road.

National Police Week is recognized from May 10 through May 16.

This week is intended to honor police officers who have given the ultimate sacrifice and lost their lives in the line of duty.

Here in Billerica, we remember and honor the sacrifice of our hometown officers, and law enforcement officers across the country. We also honor the dedication of those who risk their lives every day to protect their communities.
